Early Japanese censorship banned the appearance of the male and female sexual organs in print and film (which included cartoons). Censors demanded that such images were either removed or ‘softened’ by adding black bars across the printed materials and blurring out or ‘pixeling’ such images on film. To avoid this strict form of censorship many Japanese artists and producers chose a unique solution; a form of hentai known as ‘tentacle’ sex.
Tentacle hentai sex entails the use of long penis like tentacles which shoot out of the bodies of characters and assault their victims. Sprouting from the backs and chests of these individuals the tentacles grab their targets, pin them down, rips off their clothing, and then proceed to fondle and rape their victim. Despite the fact that these tentacles are simply long penis extensions they do not fall under the Japanese censorship guidelines.
