In Japan any materials that have sex or sexual relations as their main theme or topic are referred to as ‘hentai’. Hentai simply means ‘sexually perverse’ when applied to mangas (comics), anime (animated cartoons) or videos. Japanese hentai comes in many forms and includes all sexes and age groups. Currently a type of hentai known as lolicon is growing in popularity in Japan.
Lolicon (or rorikon) is Japanese slag meaning a ‘Lolita complex’ or an obsession with pre pubescent girls. The term gets its meaning from Vladimir Nobokov’s 1955 book entitled ‘Lolita’, a story about a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed with his neighbors twelve year old daughter.
